Motorists traveling on the Massachusetts Turnpike should expect delays beginning this week. The Commonwealth will launch all-electronic tolling systems. To complete this initiative, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation must demolish all existing toll plazas. “While we recognize that our customers may face some short term inconvenience as the toll booths come down and as we all adjust to this new system, the benefits of improved safety, reduced congestion, and improved air quality will be of long lasting, and significant benefit for the people of the Commonwealth and beyond,” shared Massachusetts Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack. To ensure the safety and success of this project, drivers are encouraged to slow down at construction sites and consider whether additional transportation options may be in their best interest. According to MassDOT, demolition will largely take place during the winter months and is expected to be completed by the end of the 2017 calendar year.
